GREEN SCORING BLASTS OFF AT THE 2010 BUSINESS EXPO!

The Plattsburgh Green Committee attended the 2010 Business Expo to kick off its Green Scoring Initiative with local businesses and organizations.  We were thrilled to encounter a high level of interest and enthusiasm for our work and were excited at the number of people who think this is a super idea and plan on "scoring"!  We were amazed at how much is already being done by our business community, and even learned of some exciting initiatives we had never thought of!  (I don't want to give anything away--I'd rather let the companys speak for themselves, so keep an eye out fo

HEALTH ALERT: JANUARY IS NATIONAL RADON ACTION MONTH

Did you know that it's possible to develop lung cancer when you've never smoked a cigarette in your life or haven't smoked for 20 years?  Exposure to a radioactive gas known, appropriately, as RADON could be the cause.  This odorless, colorless gas can enter homes through the surrounding soils and cause 20,000 deaths/year--the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths after cigarette smoking!  Fortunately, there is an easy and inexpensive way to test for the presence of radon in your home or apartment.  Log onto www.epa.gov/radon<

Here's a summary of the Plattsburgh Green Committee's activities and accomplishments for the year 2009.

Pat Yourself on the Back!! Review of 2009 Action Plan Highlights a Banner Year for Plattsburgh Green Committee!!

At the start of 2009, The Plattsburgh Green Committee developed an "Action Plan" to guide us through the year.  Now it's time to look back and see how it all played out, so we can start putting together a plan for 2010.  I have taken the "Action Plan" as written and highlighted the "Accomplishments to Date" under each heading in attempt (I hope) to give the "big picture" as easily as possible.

CAN BLACK FRIDAY BE GREEN?

When we think of today's Black Friday, we're accustomed to associating it with the color green as in MONEY--dollars spent, dollars saved, retail profits and the health of the U.S. economy.  But what about the other green, as in our environment?  Unfortunately, not so good.  Aside from the chorus of greenhouse gases rising in harmony from all the cars on the road racing to snag those 3:00 a.m.
