Green Score: Potential Questions to ask local businesses
Posted Fri, 09/04/2009 - 10:01am by Sonal Patel
The Green Score project group is working on a survey to ask local businesses about their green and sustainable practices. If you have any ideas for questions to ask, feel free to post them here.
Auto insurance customers used to bother support live staff to request something as simple as another copy of the terms of the auto insurance policy that they own. Today, this full document can be read and downloaded from the firm's website. The document can be edited, highlighted online, and printed through a home or office printer. If you forget to send a check to the insurer for a premium, and you're afraid of your coverage being suspended, the answer's easy: hop online, pay the premium with a credit card. The effects on the account are almost immediate.
Maybe some local business reviews would help the project become more consistent in getting fast results. A lot of local businesses can be found online in local directories, all we have to do is invest some time in searching them.
You most definitely have made this blog into something thats eye opening and important. You clearly know so much about the subject, you have covered so many bases.
I came lately to your website and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my initial comment. Keep writing, cause your posts are impressive! Doesn't it take up a lot of time to keep your blog so fascinating? Apartments Barcelona

I admire what you have done here. I like the part where you say you are doing this to give back but I would assume by all the comments that this is working for you as well.
This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. Its good to see that common people are coming forward and trying to do their bit for environment, I am in the business of selling New Generators and I use solar lights in my showroom.
Thank you for another great article. Where else could anyone get that kind of information in such a perfect way of writing? I have a presentation next week, and I am on a look out for such information.Termite Control VA
It is very generous of you for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and will love to learning more on this at future. I have noticed several businesses in the Plattsburgh area that do not compost organic materials. Walmart and Aldi do not separate produce or plants from the regular waste stream. They send it to the landfill with the regular trash. I mentioned this to management when I worked at Walmart, and I might just as well have been talking to the wall.
So far, I managed to go though only some of the posts you have here, but I find them very interesting and informative. Just want say thank you for the information you have shared.
If the community wants to reduce to virtually nothing the stuff that are put in the waste stream and buried, we can do so by increasing our recycling through one-bag recycling with sorting done at a central location and through creation of a community composting solution... at least in the city.

I think that this is a great idea. I think it may be easier for people to complete the survey if we have more yes/no questions, plus it would ake scoring easier as well. So maybe we could have headings like "energy efficiency", "sustainability", and "local impact", with more specific questions underneath. Here are a few suggestions:
1)Does your business use energy effiecient lighting?
2) Does your business use water saving devices?
3) Does your business have a timed thermostat to conserve energy in off-hours?
4) Does your business offer certified organic products?
5) Does your business offer sustainably harvested products?
6) Does your business use recycled products such as office paper, paper towels, and toilet tissue?
7) Does your business use organic or earth-friendly cleaning chemicals?
8) Does your business have a recycling program for paper?
glass?
plastic?
cardboard?
other?
I think this is a great idea, and would love to help put this together. I usually work tuesdya nights so I have had to miss green committtee meeetings, but let me know if you plan a subcommittee meeting for this and I would be happy to attend. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks for your comments on our Green Score questions! You are right that we need more specific questions, and the idea of breaking them down into topics is very helpful.
It's been a crazy busy month, so the subcommittee hasn't had a chance to meet. I am going to incorporate your ideas into a revised draft questionnaire, and we'll definitely set something up this month. I will post a couple of meeting dates and times and see what works best for everyone and we'll proceed.
I have black tiles in my bathroom and a clear glass showerscreens, although the look is modern, it is a nightmare to keep clean. Limescale shows up so easily, i have tried lime lite and other limescale removers. Please tell me some ideas to remove this.

3) Are you aware of basic energy efficiency measures?
4) Describe the steps, if any, you take to insure energy efficiency
5) Do you use “green” materials?
6) If so, what are they and how are they used?
7) If food use is a part of your business, do you buy locally-grown products?
8) If yes, what items and what percentage of your overall food use?
9) If you have company vehicles are they energy efficient?
10) Do you perform regular maintenance and upkeep on your vehicles?
11) Do you buy as many items as you can from local vendors?
12) Does your facility use environmentally friendly products? If yes, explain.
13) Do your employees work in an environment that encourages maximum health and safety, and are your benefit and leave policies designed to perpetuate a “green” (i.e., healthy) workforce?
14) If you have a cafeteria and/or vending machines, do they provide healthy food and snack alternatives?
15) If you are planning to expand, remodel, or build a new facility, will you incorporate any “green” construction? If yes, explain.
